Fisheries Council of Canada Unveils 2024 CANfish Magazine: Exploring Canadian Seafood Innovation and Blue Economy Impacts

Ottawa, ON – The Fisheries Council of Canada has released the anticipated 2024 issue of CANfish magazine. This
edition presents the remarkable achievements of the Canadian fishing industry, particularly in the realm of
sustainability, made possible by the industry’s long history with innovation and adaptability.
Emphasizing a forward-looking approach, the Fisheries Council of Canada (FCC) and the wider Canadian fishing
industry are committed to scaling new heights in pursuit of sustainable practices. They are actively exploring
ways to embrace the best innovations to support maximized sustainable use of Canada’s bountiful oceans and
fisheries, ensuring robust scientific support for our stewardship goals, and promoting the innovative practices
already in place within the industry.

This year’s edition of CANfish delves into these topics and more, such as:

  • The cover story, “Blue Foods are the Future,” which discusses the blue economy as the next
driver of sustainable development and food systems, and the exciting potential of growth for
    Canadian seafood;
  • A past and future analysis of Canadian seafood innovation, highlighting FCC’s published
Innovation Storyboard, which explores the innovations led by FCC members that are tackling the
problems of yesterday and today; and,
  • An opinion piece by President Paul Lansbergen, advocating for Canada to be a leader in the
development of a blue economy. Canada has the potential to be a global seafood powerhouse.
How will it get there? With a federal ecosystem that supports science-based, transparent and
    balanced policy decisions.

“The Canadian fishing industry plays a pivotal role in advancing innovation, sustainability, and global leadership
to ensure a healthy diet for our growing population,” said Paul Lansbergen, President, FCC. “CANfish magazine
serves as a platform to broadcast the facets of an industry pivotal to Canada’s history, culture and economy.”
