Fisheries Industry Priorities Unchanged During Liberal Party Leadership Transition
OTTAWA, ON: The Fisheries Council of Canada (FCC) emphasizes that the pressing challenges facing our wild
capture fisheries sector require immediate and sustained attention, regardless of any political transition period.
This statement is in the wake of the Honourable Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement of his intention to
step down as Liberal leader.
“I must underscore that the complex issues affecting our industry cannot be placed on hold during this leadership
change”, says Alberto Wareham, Chair of the Fisheries Council of Canada. “Across our Pacific, Atlantic, and
Arctic coasts, our industry faces mounting challenges from evolving environmental conditions, shifting
international trade dynamics, and complex policy frameworks that demand immediate attention.”
These challenges pose significant risks to the 90,000 Canadians directly employed in our fisheries sector and the
estimated 400,000 workers in associated industries including processing, transportation, shipbuilding, and coastal
tourism. “The economic implications extend far beyond our coastal communities, affecting supply chains, food
security, and Canada’s position in global seafood markets valued at over $9 billion in annual exports”, Wareham
adds.
The sustainability of our wild fisheries, the economic vitality of our coastal communities, and the food security of
Canadians remain our paramount concerns. The FCC calls for:
- Improved stability of access and allocation for enhanced long-term investment and sustainable practices
- Enhanced consultation mechanisms between industry stakeholders and federal decision-makers
- Evidence-based policies that balance conservation with economic sustainability
- Strengthened international partnerships to protect Canadian fishing interests
The FCC stands ready to engage productively with the next Liberal Party leader and their team to advance these
priorities. Our members represent a vital sector of Canada’s economy and food system, and we remain committed
to ensuring their voices are heard as we navigate this transition.
We look forward to constructive dialogue in the coming weeks to ensure the Canadian fisheries industry receives
the focused attention they require during this important time for Canadian leadership.
