2023 Issue of CANfish Magazine Explores Science and Innovation in the Canadian Fisheries Industry

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 9, 2023

OTTAWA, ON: The Fisheries Council of Canada (FCC) has published the 2023 issue of CANfish magazine, exploring science and innovation in the Canadian fisheries industry and the path towards maximized sustainability. The magazine also includes a product directory of Canadian seafood products.

Did you know the Canadian fishing industry ranks second in the world in third-party sustainability certifications, with 61% of landings certified compared to just 16% globally? This outstanding achievement in sustainability is a result of a significant commitment to science and innovation. In 2023, FCC and the wider Canadian fishing industry is focused on ways to reach even higher: how can we adopt the best innovations to support maximized sustainable use of our fisheries, how can we ensure we have sufficient science to support our stewardship goals, and how can we promote what our industry is already doing to be among the most innovative?

The Canadian fishing industry is at the forefront of adopting new harvesting and processing innovations that continue to improve efficiency and sustainability. This year’s edition of CANfish explores the ways the Canadian seafood industry is working to be one of the most sustainable food providers in the world, with articles like:

  • Our cover story, New Gear and Vessels and AI, Oh My!, which explores the ways Canadian fishing companies are adopting new technologies and processes to be better every day;
  • An opinion piece, Invest in Science Today to Support Blue Food Movement of Tomorrow, which outlines the thoughts of FCC President Paul Lansbergen on how Canada can lead the blue food movement; and,
  • An interview with Jo-Ann McArthur, President of Nourish Food Marketing, Smarter Meals Out of the Blue: Adding Canadian Seafood to Canadian Diets, to learn more about the Choose Canadian Seafood domestic marketing campaign and consumer attitudes towards seafood.

“This year’s edition of CANfish magazine tells the story of how the Canadian fishing industry is embracing science and innovation to capture the full potential of our waters,” said Paul Lansbergen, President, FCC. “With the longest coastline in the world, and some of the best sustainability metrics of anyone, our industry has the potential to be a global leader in production of sustainable seafood and be a key player in feeding the growing population.”
